Our Bischofsmütze
Filzmoos and his Bischofsmütze belong together like Zermatt and the Matterhorn or like rope and hook. The Bischofsmütze is the highest and probably also the most beautiful mountain of the Gosau mountain range. It has an impressive unmistakable from. But that's not all. The Bischofsmütze is powerfull and calming at the same time.
The "Big Bischofsmütze" (2.454 m), the "Small Mütze" (2.428 m).
The summit consists of limestone, the lower part of primary rocks.
The "Big Bischofsmütze" is very popular for mountaineering. The first mountaineers, who reached the top were the mountain guides Auhäusler and Steiner on 28.06.1879.
On September 22nd 1993 at 15:45 pm there was a big thunder storm. A ca. 100 m wide cliff broke off from the east side of the Mütze, fell into the depth and landed in the Eiskarl.
On Sunday October 19th 1883, the earth under the Mütze shook again. Over 50.000m³ or rocks broke off from the south side and rushed donw in the valley.
